Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet structure, and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more precise, sharper and less cloying than on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed a few months later, and the group embarked on a long-distance tour in support of it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
