    Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

    Discourse Construction Tests

    The test for discourse completion is a common instrument in pragmatic research. It has many advantages however, it also has its disadvantages. The DCT for instance, does not take into account individual and cultural variations. Additionally the DCT can be biased and may result in overgeneralizations. It should be carefully analyzed before it is used for research or assessment.

    Despite its limitations, the DCT can be a valuable tool to study the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. Its ability to use two or more stages to influence social variables related to politeness is a plus. This can assist researchers to study the role played by prosody in communication across cultural contexts, a key issue in cross-cultural pragmatics.

    In the field of linguistics the DCT has emerged as one of the primary instruments for analyzing learners' communication behaviors. It can be used to investigate a variety of issues such as politeness, turn-taking, and lexical selection. It can also be used to determine the phonological difficulty of learners' speech.

    A recent study used a DCT to test EFL students' refusal skills. Participants were presented with various scenarios and asked to choose the appropriate response from the choices provided. The authors discovered that the DCT to be more effective than other methods for refusing like a questionnaire or video recordings.     Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)

    This study explored Chinese learners' decisions regarding their use of Korean through a variety of tools that were tested, including Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs), metapragmatic questionnaires, and Refusal Interviews (RIs). Participants were 46 CLKs with upper-intermediate ability who provided responses to DCTs and MQs. They were also required to provide reflections on their opinions and refusals in RIs. The results showed that CLKs often resisted native Korean pragmatic norms, and their decisions were influenced by four major factors that included their personalities, their multilingual identities, ongoing life histories, and relationship advantages. These findings have implications for pedagogy for L2 Korean assessment.

    The MQ data were examined to identify the participants' choices in terms of their pragmatics. The data were classified according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared their choices made by the participants with their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine if they are indicative of pragmatic resistance. Interviewees also had to explain why they chose a pragmatic behavior in certain situations.

    The findings of the MQs and DCTs were then examined using descriptive statistics and z-tests. It was found that CLKs often resorted to the use of euphemistic phrases such as "sorry" and "thank you." This was likely due to their lack of experience with the target language which resulted in an inadequate understanding of korea pragmatic norms. The results showed that CLKs' preferences to differ from L1 and L2 norms or to be more convergent towards L1 varied depending on the DCT circumstances.     The results showed that, on average, the CLKs disapproved of native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their answers. This will help them better understand the effects of different cultural environments on the behavior of students and classroom interactions of L2 students. This will also aid educators develop better methods for teaching and testing Korean pragmatics.
