Choosing a Double Pram and Pushchair

A double pram or pushchair will simplify life for families, particularly on busy footpaths or in stores and shops. Select a model that offers ample storage space for nappies, snacks, and other essentials.

Some parents who are first-time parents opt for a future-proof pushchair that can be used both as a single stroller at the time baby is born, and later changed to a twin mode after the baby arrives. Joolz offers a variety of these options.

Tandem

The news that you're expecting the birth of a child is one of the most exciting times in your life. When the excitement wears off and the reality of the situation sets in, you'll be faced with many decisions regarding how to prepare your family for. The proper stroller or pram is among the most important things to consider.

Tandem prams (also known as "in-line" double prams) are a timeless design that feature two bassinets or seats for prams arranged side by side. The front seat, which is typically cushioned, reclines flat and is suitable for newborns. The second seat is more upright and designed to fit toddlers as young as three years old. Some models let you select whether your children stare at each other or face each other. Many tandems have the option of converting into a single pushchair if you decide that your oldest child doesn't require the second seat.

A tandem is cheaper than a twin strollers for newborns pram and can be an excellent choice for parents who want to save money, without compromising safety or functionality. However, the drawback of a tandem is that it may be heavy and long to steer, particularly when moving up and down kerbs. Additionally, it is usually less stable than a twin pram especially if the child with the most weight is seated in the front. A tandem can be difficult to place on public transportation, and it can be difficult to navigate narrow roads.

Side by side

When it comes time to choose a double pushchair or pram there's a lot to consider. If you're buying for twins or other siblings that are similar in age, there are a number of configuration choices to think about. Tandem prams (also called side by side prams) are a popular choice since they can be set up to accommodate infants with a bassinet on the top, while the larger toddler or infant is in the second seat below.

Convertible

The top double prams and pushchairs are able to be used in multiple ways, and some are even capable of changing seat configurations to suit your changing family needs. You can fit two toddlers in seats or a third child on the seat board and have enough space for a basket to store your shopping, and the ability to add additional accessories such as rain covers is a benefit. The Graco Modes Nest2Grow convertible is an example of a very inexpensive convertible that is very easy to use. However, our test participants thought it was somewhat heavy for its price.

Some convertible double strollers like the Baby Jogger City Select 2 come with a carrycot suitable for infants. This allows the double infant strollers stroller to be folded down and reduced in size when not being used. Our testers were impressed with the City Select's unique one-handed fold. However, it does take some practice. It also feels quite nimble and responsive, despite it being bigger than other double strollers.

Another option that is reasonably priced is an affordable option is the Cybex Mockingbird Single-to-Double Stroller. It can be converted from a car seat with a parent seat to a forward-facing toddler car seat and the bassinet option is a great choice for infants (although keep in mind that infants under 4 months old should never use strollers to sleep due to the danger of asphyxia from position).

For more flexibility, look for a dual-mode convertible like the iCandy Peach. This is a narrow double stroller that can hold two children side-by-side. It can be used to create a tandem by adding a second seating kit. It is nimble and responsive, and our test users loved its sleek design. It's not as light as the other pushchairs we've reviewed however it does come with a large shopping basket which is ideal for parents with bags full of toys and groceries.

Lightweight

Convertible double strollers are a great option for parents who have children and anticipate another. The only issue with the iCandy Peach is that it is quite heavy, but Cher felt this was balanced by its ease to maneuver and how large the storage space is with two hanging parent and child cup holders as well as seat-back pockets, and a large underseat basket. Cher also loved that the seats can be reversed to be positioned to face each other, which is great for siblings who want to talk and interact when they are out and about.

A lighter-weight but just as impressive choice is the Delta Children LX side-by-side stroller that weighs only 18 pounds, is extremely compact twin stroller and has an auto-standing fold that makes it easy to transport and put in your trunk or at home. Parents are impressed by the quality of the materials and workmanship as well as the affordable price. The only downside is that the seats don't recline as far as other models we've tested, and the rear seat doesn't have great visibility because of its position that is higher than the front seat.

The Joolz Geo 3 is another popular option. It's slim, sleek, easy to steer, and comes with a lifetime warranty. Although they are smaller side-by-side prams may be larger than tandems and inline doubles. This can make them difficult to maneuver on busy footpaths and in shops. However, they're generally shorter, which means they are easier to maneuver in tight spaces than tandems.
