Door Handle Replacement

Door handles may seem like a small detail, but if you dislike the way they look or are unable to use them then it's time to replace them. With a little patience, you can get an entirely new handle in a short time.

Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates which hide the screws for a more attractive appearance. However, you'll need to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't already have them.

Removal of the Old Handle

The door handle isn't only a decorative addition to your home It's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock the door. But, over time your door handle can lose its grip, feel loose, or appear old and worn out. This is a sign that it's probably time for a replacement.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a serious issue because you won't be able to lock or unlock the door which could put you and your family at risk.

It is also recommended to replace your door handle if it is damaged or broken. A broken door handle is dangerous, especially for children and elderly family members who might struggle to open it. The first step is to remove the screw that holds the latch plate. The screws are often quite tight and require a bit of force to loosen them. If you can, it might be helpful to have another person assist with this part.

After the screws have been removed, the latch plate should slide out of the door with ease. If it is stuck or doesn't move then use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Install the latch plate in the doorjamb using the wood screws that were included with the new handles. Do not tighten the screws too much because this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and open the door to determine if it latches and closes properly. If it doesn't, you will need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down or forward or back until the door shuts correctly.

If the door is still jiggling or moving, it may be necessary to expand the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more common for older doors, but could be due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are too narrow or not the right size for the latch, or due to damaged or broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case you can use a metal file instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Removal of the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your victorian scroll door handles. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also hooks into an opening in the door's frame so that the door remains closed. You may have to repeat this procedure several times before you can remove the latch.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any issues after you've removed the old one. Make sure the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and lined up with the screw chambers, and then use your new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and patio door handle frame.

Before installing the new handle, be sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the front of the door to the edge). Make sure that the size of the latch of the new handle matches the measurement.

You'll require a new cylinder for your lock if you're replacing the handle and latch or if your current one is damaged. If you're not changing locks the new lock should fit in your existing recess, and will work with your current keys. Make sure you select an entry point with rectangular cover plates that match the handles you have.

Removing the Cover Plate
